MANLY MAN

I must admit that I have really been surprised by the things I am doing with my hands.

The heater in my van stopped working about two months ago. This didn't cause an alarm because it was autumn - and we really didn't need the heat. But about a week ago it started to get very cold, and my wife looked at me and said, "are you ever planning on fixing the heat?"

I didn't want to take the van to a mechanic and pay hundreds of dollars to fix it. I decided to look it up on the Internet to figure out what the problem was.

After diagnosing the problem I went to the auto store and picked up a part and took the risk -with the help of a friend who kind of knows his way around - we fixed the blower in the van. I saved about $500 and now have a van that is nice and toasty.

If you're impressed with that story let me tell you I'm in the middle of renovating my bathroom. I finished grouting this morning and just need to put sealant over the tiles and I will have a brand-new bathroom floor and toilet.

I guess what it takes is a little bit of self-confidence to know that you can do some things on your own. The other big thing that you need in order to do home renovations projects is the ability to have some free time- that's an entirely different blog post.

I used voice recognition software to create this blog post.

Free time is the biggest challenge. Trust me.

The rest can be learned.
